la otra orilla

Escritos sobre la arena...

En una epoca de engaño universal,
decir la verdad
es un acto revolucionario.
George Orwell

If you want
to make peace with your enemy,
you have to work  with your enemy.
Then he becomes your partner.

La Prensa caught in its own propaganda

La Prensa caught in its own propaganda

by Okke Ornstein/ Noriegaville
PANAMA - Corrupt Supreme Court judge Winston Spadafora goes after corrupt newspaper La Prensa and has all personal assets of its journalist Marcel Chery frozen. Outside La Prensa, Noriegaville has been the only publication to report on the issue. We feel that attacks on journalists need to be covered widely and irrespective of different opinions about news and current events.

Now if only La Prensa would think the same. Or Marcel Chery, for that matter, because we have yet to read the first piece of this fine journalist in which he denounces attacks on journalists other than himself.

If we are to believe La Prensa, there are no more "gag laws" in Panama limiting the freedom of press, thanks to the efforts of our enlightened president Martin Torrijos and the pro-dictatorship Inter American Press Association.

If we are to believe that reporting in La Prensa accurately represents the truth of what happens in Panama, no journalists are fired anywhere, no news and opinion shows are being cancelled, none of the rabiblancos are using their economic power to kill unfavorable stories, there is no racism at TVN, that story was not killed by all other media and Vivian de Torrijos never planted any Spaniard inside La Prensa to keep an eye on things.

La Prensa, in other words, has over the last years consistently falsified the news. La Prensa supported Martin Torrijos' campaign because its director Federico Humbert had to become ambassador in Washington. It has ignored attacks on the freedom of expression and the freedom of press because that suits its political agenda.

Repudiating its history as an anti-dictatorship and pro-freedom paper, it has constantly left the victims of attacks on press freedom out in the cold. When the wife of TVN reporter Justino Gonzalez was fired as a repercussion for a report Gonzalez produced, La Prensa didn't denounce it. When Mayella Lloyd was trashed by TVN because she signed up for a journalist labor union and because she is a morena La Prensa remained silent. When two journalists were thrown out at RPC because they didn't want to twist the news, La Prensa didn't lift a finger. When a US hustler and fraud artist went after The Panama News and tried to get its editor jailed and this reporter expelled from the country, La Prensa wasn't interested. When FETV's management cancelled all news and opinion programming, La Prensa threatened to fire the only journalist who dared suggest to report the truth about that affair. Then they continued and fired Marcos Castillo, because he actually managed the opinion pages as opinion pages and gave opposition against the government a voice.

La Prensa has become an accomplice in the suppression of freedom of information, freedom of expression and freedom of press. Its once spirited founders have turned into drooling old men who just stand by and watch the deterioration of what they created. Every now and then they are picked up from their nursing homes to listen to a speech of Martin Torrijos or some dictatorship character from Uruguay.

So, now that a rogue Supreme Court judge is harassing one of its journalists filing multi-million dollar libel suits and freezing assets, will La Prensa continue to back its false statements that there are no more gag laws in Panama?

Will Eisenmann and Sanchez Borbon finally wake up from their comas, intervene, and bring back some decency and journalistic ethics to the pages of their "diario libre"?

Because, we do feel sorry and solidarity for journalist Marcel Chery who reported nothing but the truth about Winston Spadafora. Chery doesn't deserve to be harassed by this corrupto who uses his position to get his friends off the hook, used to sell Panamanian consulates and accepted bribes from Marc M. Harris together with some other members of the Chitré clan. But La Prensa should stop crying crocodile tears. They deserve to be exposed for their lies, their hypocrisy and their complicity in attacks on a free press. If this case accomplishes that, so much the better.
