La Prensa Gets Awards From
Uruguayan Journalist Killer In Self-Sponsored Event
Noriegaville
Just when we thought we'd seen it all with La Prensa's latest sleaze banning Maribel Cuervo from its opinion pages on orders of a corrupt-journalist-turned-ambassador, we read today that the Ministry of Information has won four awards in the National Journalism Contest, which is mainly sponsored by - surprise, surprise - La Prensa and its incestuous clique of advertisers.
But not just are they sticking feathers into their own asses, it's worth looking as well who gave and received these trophies.
In the jury: Danilo Arbilla**. He's a former member of the military dictatorship in Uruguay and responsible for arrests, torture, disappearances and murders of journalists. He also figured on the board of the ultra-right Inter American Press Association (IAPA), which caused several publications to cancel their membership of that anti-democratic group. They love this facistoïd human rights violator at La Prensa. They banned Maribel Cuervo from the same opinion pages where Mr. Arbilla compared Venezuela's Chavez with Hitler - just to show you the sort of editorial choices they make at that "newspaper." They welcome Arbilla as some sort of hero when IAPA has its annual dinner party in Panama.
One award went to Argentinean journalist (they can't find sufficient Panamanians willing to work for La Prensa any more) Guido Bilbao. We know him because he translates our articles without quoting the source, publishes them as his own and then rats out other sources. He'd fit right in there with the Arbilla crowd.
None of this is revealed on La Prensa's pages of course. We assume giving awards to themselves at least allows employees to take the paper seriously - nobody else does.
